Health insurance for young adults

4 Ways to Get Coverage

1. Get on Mom and/or Dad’s Plan

If you know someone under 26, they can be on their parents’ health insurance plans. This is true even if they don’t live at the same address and even if they have a home and/or family of their own.

2. Get a Short-Term, Limited-Duration Plan (STLD)

Short-term, limited-duration plans can provide catastrophic coverage in a pinch. These plans can come in handy if anyone just needs basic coverage to get them through a limited duration of time (let’s say they're waiting for benefits to kick in from a new employer). Sanford Health Plan offers its own STLD plan: Sanford Safeguard. Keep in mind: these plans are exempt from Affordable Care Act (ACA) minimum requirements, so make sure to read the fine print. Depending on someone's needs, and tolerance for risk, something like Sanford Safeguard might be the right choice.

3. Apply for Government Assistance

If you know someone in immediate need and finances may be an issue, they can apply for a handful of federally funded health insurance programs. These programs (Medicaid and CHIP Children’s Health Insurance Program), provide health insurance coverage at low-or no-cost for qualifying individuals. If they qualify for assistance through Medicaid or CHIP, they can enroll at any time and coverage starts immediately.

4. Federal Marketplace

Find an affordable, quality health care coverage through the federal marketplace at marketplace.sanfordhealthplan.com. Open enrollment is Nov. 1, 2022 through Jan. 15, 2023.
